The Ending Writes Itself

by Evelyn Clarke

Read in

As someone who is still working to become a better and more rounded reader, I wanted to pick up another new author for myself and landed on The Ending Writes Itself by Evelyn Clarke. Once I realized that Evelyn is actually just a pen-name for the writing duo of authors V.E. Schwab and Cat Clarke, I became slightly nervous to begin reading the work just because I have not had a great experience so far trying to read works in the realm of Fantasy or Sci-Fi and I know that’s what Schwab’s most popular works are categorized as.

I am happy that I did pick up this book, however, because I found the duo’s writing to be spectacular. I found the prose to not be overly complicated and in some moments just completely effortless as I continued to flip through the pages. The writing pulls you along through each chapter, making you never want to stop reading as they lay their breadcrumbs to get you to the end.

Speaking of the end, that is where I felt like I was thrown over the metaphorical cliff. Unfortunately, the ending that they concocted completely derailed this book for me. Parts of me were hoping for this giant payoff and in the end it just felt as if there should have been another twist or turn to complete the book.

Even though the ending that is written for this book isn’t what I was hoping for, I still think everyone should give this a try. The book is still written beautifully and deserves to be given a shot.
